For the last few months, I have been co-managing MCA's Summer Art Camp program. I am having the time of my life working with young artists and being constantly amazed at the work they produce in just five days of camp.
The camp runs for four weeks in June and July. Students choose from any of those four weeks with two class options for each day and the ages of the campers range from pre K-12th grade. This year, we offered metals, drawing and painting, soft and clay sculpture, photoshop, digital and darkroom photography, comics, and more. These classes are taught by trained degree holding artists and they are challenging and super fun. We always receive such positive feedback from both campers and parents alike and I am not surprised.
Starting on Wednesday, the teachers, myself, and a few helpers put together an amazing exhibition of our Summer Art Camp participants this year. Each student has one piece in this show. It was awesome to figure out where to put all of the artwork and to come up with a satisfying arrangement that looked nice in the entire Rust Hall gallery of Memphis College of Art. Here are some progress shots through various stages of the hanging process. The show will officially open on July 19th with a closing reception on Sunday, July 27th. This is really one of the best shows at MCA each year, so come check it out before it's over!
